About DISUK Limited

DISUK is a UK based manufacturer of hardware encryption appliances for tape systems. DISUK’s Paranoia family, of tape encryption appliances, was launched in 1996 and has been successfully used to protect data in a number of industries; such as financial, healthcare, government, military and corporate establishments. The Paranoia range of products is available globally.
With the increased reliance on computer held information the need to ensure this information is secure when on tape has expanded into many differing areas. The application for both the Paranoia and SafeTape products is continuously increasing and includes
DISUK is a private UK based company dedicated to developing storage security solutions to address critical business requirements, including data privacy, regulatory compliance, intellectual property protection, and internal controls. DISUK was founded in 2004, and provides security solutions to many of the world's largest enterprise customers.

Market Drivers
There are numerous pieces of legislation which Paranoia2 can help you abide by. This legislation includes: Sarbanes Oxley Act, California Senate Bill 1386 (SB 1386), Database Protection Act , the Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard compliance or simply to meet the needs of good company business governance, then Paranoia2 is there to meet these needs.

Products
The Paranoia2 is the second generation in the Paranoia family of encryption appliances. It has a SCSI or fibre channel interfaces and supports stand alone tapes, tape autoloaders and libraries. It is fully transparent to the host and can even pass diagnostic commands and information between the host and drives.
By utilising the optional network support the GUI can be used to set and monitor the unit across the LAN, WAN or VPN. Paranoia2 is designed to fit into any environment; there will be no reason for you to change your IT systems or procedures. Easy to use and with simple system integration, means Paranoia2 is perfect in a disaster recovery situation where fast retrieval of data is of paramount importance.

The Paranoia3 is the third generation of encryption appliances from DISUK Limited. Designed to include most asspects of the Paranoia2 however with increased through put and higher speed SCSI and Fibre Channel Interfaces and the AES Encryption engine it is the more powerful predecessor to the Paranoia2. The Paranoia3 offers you a simple to implement and utilise solution to meet your requirements.

Applications

Secure Data Transit
Even the largest and most professional companies that offer to move your tapes from one site to another suggest that if the data is sensitive it should be encrypted. Many large data losses have occurred when tapes have been 'lost' in transit. If the data has been encrypted the data cannot be compromised.

Secure Data Vaulting
Once your tapes have been taken off-site, en route to the secure vaults the data is already at risk. Encrypting the data ensures the customer data remains secured whatever happens to the media.

Data Integrity
If your tape can be accessed then it can be changed without your knowledge and with no audit trail to track the changes. By encrypting the data you can be sure it cannot be changed.

Internal Privacy
If you need to share a large tape library there is always the concern that sensitive data from one system could be inadvertently read on another system. Utilising a Paranoia2 in-line from the system with secure data will ensure this cannot occur.

Medical Records
The requirement to ensure that patient’s medical records are kept confidential is understood all over the world. Many countries are aware of this and have introduced legislation to ensure that the records are kept confidential. Placing a Paranoia2 into the environment can ensure that the integrity of these records are not compromised.

History Of Paranoia
In 1996 we were invited to attend a meeting in Switzerland with our Swiss reseller and a risk management company (founded by a group of Swiss banks). At that time our core business was the supply of tape subsystems, but we were invited to discuss a new security requirement they had identified.
They explained that they had major concerns about backup tapes being moved between two bank locations, one in Zurich and one in Basle. They had been using the two sites for Disaster Recover (DR), but after an incident, when the vehicle transporting the tapes was involved in an accident, they had determined there was a security concern. To remove this weakness they wished to encrypt all of their tapes that left any of their sites.
At that time there was a hardware tape encryption product available from an Irish company and we pointed this out to them. They explained that this was only suitable for narrow SCSI tapes, was specific to two backup products and in any case had just ceased production with no replacement planned!
On the flight back, we looked at the product portfolio and realised we should be able to utilise the basic design from an emulation product, by adding encryption it would meet their requirements. This was the original design for what evolved into the Paranoia range of products.
